Configuration Management Database (CMDB)

The heart of any well managed IT service is the CMDB - it is the key source of information on all configuration items (CIs) in your information system, and in turn, it is a key capability of an IT Services Management system to maintain, report on and update the CIs in the system.

CIs can be either logical or physical and include but are not limited to:

• Individual PCs
• Servers
• Software components (and associated licences)
• Documentation Items
• Requirements

or essentially any collection of objects which are or can be related to other items in the larger information system.

The CMDB maps the relationship between each of the items, in either a documented or visual format, and allows the identification of key dependencies within the IT environment. This allows for quick identification of critical systems within an IT architecture, and can assist the prediction of the effects of failure of one or more of the CIs on overall system performance, and therefore functionality.
